    Bayweb Flowchart

    * Your thermostat may have additional terminals that are not being used. If there is no wire attached to a terminal, and no jumper to another terminal, please ignore these terminals when choosing a thermostat.

** Unit requires 4 wires. You may need to install a new thermostat cable - please consult if you are unsure. (It is possible, but not preferred, to obtain satisfactory service wiring using 3 wires - please consult if you are unsure.)

Please note that in rare cases, a manufacturer may use proprietary controls that may not be compatible with this thermostat.

Need help determining which model you need? Just email us a picture of the backplate of your existing thermostat (with wires still connected if possible), and our tech team will be happy to help determine what you need. Send pictures to support@diycontrols.com.

I own a vacation home in New England. Last winter we arrived there for a weekend and found that the heat had gone off and the house was below freezing. Even though we had drained the plumbing system the little bits of water remaining in the pipes froze and caused some damage. This winter I resolved to keep the house warmer and have a freeze alarm installed through my home security company. Because I had the heat up my oil bill was over a thousand dollars for December and January. I decided to install this thermostat. Now I keep my heat at 50 degrees and I can check on the house temperature any time I want. The BayWeb website keeps logs of interior and exterior temperatures and when the boiler goes on and shuts off. In addition, before we leave home to go to our vacation house I can turn the heat up from my laptop and the house is toasty when we arrive. The thermostat is very precise and keeps the house temperature within a degree of the set point. I expect my current tank of oil to go a lot father than my last one! (via Amazon)

BOTTOM LINE: It took less than 1 hour from removing thermostat to new installation and completing programming. The thermostat is sure to be a hit with vacation homeowners and homeowners with random occupancy of their home. My son is already saying that I am addicted to checking the readings at our vacation home. The main company, Bay, "is an energy solutions company that provides products and services to a broad range of industrial, commercial, government," and has now branched into the residential home market. I called the BAYweb customer support to address some pre-purchase questions and was immediately put through to a helpful and friendly representative. I found out that this thermostat has been in full production for less than a year and that most problems thus far relate to making sure that wiring is correct (which is true for any replacement thermostat). There are two main parts to the BAYweb system, a thermostat display/control and separate module that require a power outlet. The devices were shipped well packaged. I also purchased the wireless motion sensor to alert me of unauthorized intrusions. The company has another use for motion detection and that is to determine whether to provide heating or cooling when the house is occupied, which has the potential for energy savings. Once I installed the display which took 5 minutes, installed the control module which took about 10 minutes, ran my cat5 wiring from the router to the control module and powered the module up, the thermostat worked as suggested. I setup my account at BAYweb, added my device using the serial # and key and whola. You can see a demo of the webviews at the company's website. (via Amazon)

I nearly passed on this thermostat because I was initially weighing the cosmetics of the thermostat itself. As it turns out, the Bayweb thermostat is much more powerful than it appears. When wired with an occupancy sensor, water level sensor, or moisture sensor, the Bayweb becomes a poor man's security system in addition to a full-featured thermostat. Installation was straightforward. For the occupancy sensor (motion detector), I ran 2 bell wires up a wiring chase from the basement to the attic and then back down through the wall where the thermostat was located. For the "brain", I mounted it on a board next to my network rack in a utility area in the basement. I then ran a new thermostat wire to and from the furnace to the "brain". Once connected, setting up the online account was a snap. Scheduling times and set points via the web interface was a simple drag and highlight affair. The reporting capabilities are slick and can give a snapshot of energy costs and usage. From my Motorola Droid, I can make easy changes to the thermostat settings (Bayweb has a mobile website). This thermostat is ideal for our family because we have odd, frequently changing schedules with a babysitter at our house several days a week. The occupancy sensing is a must-have feature. Tech support is exemplary- I had an after-hours question on a Sunday night, and it was replied to within minutes. A highly recommended product, to be sure. It's even made in the USA. For the money, you can't beat the functionality. (via Amazon)
